You Said Hello

By Maria K Jimmy

Beneath a charade of deceptive smiles

I was a wounded animal - scarred and scared
Skeptical with flaws and insecurities
I had been smashed , shattered like glass
And thrown behind the bars of an unholy prison.
And then you said Hello.
The ghost of a grin twinkling in your eyes
You pressed your lips onto all the unloved bits of me
Gently peeling off all the layers of skin I hid under.
You showed me that even broken strings can be changed
And that the music would only get better that way.
You inked your story onto my skin.
You made me breathe and you made me breathless
You birthed poetry from my cries and sighs.
Your eyes darker and more alive than before
They brew my limbless body back to life.
And then my heart throbbed
It gasped and choked
As if it were irrevocably and undeniably
In love with you.
You showed me that even transient moments
Are full of blissful infinities.
I don't know if you realize this but
I swear you saved me with your Hello that day.
