We, Today, meet as nations

Lubna Irfan

We, Today, meet as nations
Each grown out of one another
Each with swords drawn on issues
Of women and their bodies
Of color and its hues
Of love and its death
We, Today, meet as entities
And not lovers
We don't meet
Like we used to
In the rickety car
Where we were mere ideas
Colliding in the night's womb
You resting your head on me
Me holding you from falling
And smashing into pieces
Our hopes weaving each other
Just behind the window pane
We now meet as nations
At the end of the world
We meet as Others
And as you said
The smell of the past
Sometimes does stumble upon itself
To meet my eye
But we'll never meet as lovers again
We'll only meet as mere entities, love
