Women

By Archana Bharti

I am sorry..
For being a woman.

How dare I
Make you uncomfortable
With my skin exposed,
And with my skin covered?
How dare I?

How dare I
Excite your desires
With a bare face,
And with a painted face?
How dare I?

I am sorry-
For walking back home
Late at night.
I was working.

I am sorry—
For opening the door
To take my food.
I was hungry.

I am sorry-
For being alone.
I trusted him.
He was family.

I am sorry-
For resting alone.
I was tired.
It was my workplace.

I am sorry-
For being a woman.

How dare I
Speak for my rights?
I should be mute.

How dare I
Step out of my house?
I should be locked.

How dare I
Have my own thoughts?
I should be obedient.

How dare I
Trust anyone?
I am WOMAN.

Since "Men will be Men,"
I am sorry-
For being a WOMAN.
