Why Blame Me?

By Keerti Dahar

Why Blame Me?
Why did you walk home under the moon's gentle glow?
Didn't you know danger lurked, waiting below?
What were you wearing, did it invite the night?
Did you laugh too loud, did you speak too bright?

Why trust a friend when you could stay inside?
Why share a secret with someone who lied?
Did you flirt too much, were your eyes too keen?
Why seek your freedom, if it might go unseen?
Did you think you are safe just  because you're young?
Shouldn't you act like you're told, keep your heart unsung?
Why go out late if you carve independence?
Who would've thought, that choice would bring such pretence?

With each question posed, the weight of blame grows,
As if my choices triggered these throes.

Teach your sons the truth they must learn.
To respect, to honour, to discern.
Instead of lashes launched my way,
Tell your sons to keep their whistles away.

Why must I wear the clock of shame?
While you walk free, disguised by name?
