Wherever I go, – Delhi Poetry Slam

Wherever I go,

By Kaavya Indrayan

I miss my mummy’s food. Perfectly round rotis served warm with spicy chicken curry which is the right hue of an orangish brown. It reminds me of the colors Charlottesville shows off in the fall. In Delhi, however, we do not have fall. We have autumn.

Fall is a foreign concept to me; I find it intriguing.

I spoke to my papa yesterday. We talked about the political state of the United States. We discussed the ongoing elections. He thinks it can go either way.

How do you pronounce either? Do you say ‘ee-ther’ or ‘eye-ther’? For me, it can go eye/ee-ther way.

My parents know me as talkative, confident, and opinionated. I often wonder if they would recognize the version of me that resides in Charlottesville - soft spoken, calm, reserved.

Your accent can’ t be made fun of if it isn’ t heard.

Here, I let my work speak for me. Turns out it is true, sometimes less is in fact more. In Charlottesville, I am allowed to speak in verses and songs, there is a community that sings along.

Well, there is also a community that wants me gone.

Yesterday, I was on a journey to figure out my tomorrow. I searched for answers, hoping my purpose is hidden amongst the stalls of a career fair.

No luck there.

My brain is a maze that I am often trapped in; today, the walls of ‘I can figure this out’ were blocked by ‘I do not belong here.’

I come from two worlds.

I miss my mummy’ s food.

Wherever I go.
