When Existence is Tough

By Mallika Agarwal

Dear human,
maybe you’re struggling today
I wish you could know,
things won’t stay that way

Maybe you’ve had enough,
enough of trying
and maybe you’re thinking
I’d rather be dying

Whether it’s in spirit or flesh,
maybe you just want to be free
I get it, I do
but please know that I see—

I see you, dear human
with your attempts at life,
your motivational quotes
and the books by your bedside

I see you, trying to get up
with your routines, your habits
and your soul in your drafts;
I assure you, you’re not that far

You’re not that far
from a better day, a better week;
It’s making its way to you
right as we speak

I know this, because I’ve been you
I know this, I’ve been through it too;
Life will open up, I’m fairly sure of that
tomorrow, I think, you might even be glad

Glad that you don’t give up
glad that you hold on,
there’s more to this world—
you can’t see it if you’re gone.

So, dear human—
maybe you’re struggling today;
maybe you’re tired
and maybe it just doesn’t go away

Know that, despite all of it
there’s another chapter to your life;
Personally, I think it’s worth trying—
if only to see— what that’d be like.
