We Grew Up – Delhi Poetry Slam

We Grew Up

By Hritika Kashyap

From craving for Bournvita to alcohol,
we all grew up.

Remember when happiness was birthday gifts,
and sadness when you scrapped off your knees.
When love only meant mom and dad.

Remember when friendship was filling each other’s slam books,
goodbyes were only till tomorrow.
And dad's shoulders and mom's lap were the best places.

Remember when wearing skirts didn't question your character,
and precaution meant wearing a helmet.

Remember when how you looked didn't bother you,
when what people think about you was none of your business.

Tricycle turned into cars,
homework into trash.
Kiss into sex,
cough syrups to drugs.
Milk to vodka,
lollipops to cigarettes.

From a loud cry to silent cry,
we all grew up,
'cause we all are just kids who
grew up way too fast.
