Wavering Lines of the Heart

By Shree Ghosh

I wrote a note to my dearest, bidding him adieu.
The blade in my cold palm-inviting and comforting.
I pondered if the crimson curtain adorning these selfish wrists
Were warmer than being in the arms of my beloved?

I wrote a note to my brother, bidding him goodbye.
I eyed the rope hanging from the ceiling fan,
Promising me peace and quiet.
I pondered if the tightened noose around my neck
Would be as tight as his embrace?

I wrote a note to my best friend, bidding him farewell.
The pills on my desk lay, pleading an endless slumber.
I pondered if they could make me forget it all-
As my best friend did, of all my woes.

I could not write a note to my parents.
Couldn't bid them goodbye.
For if I have such people in my life
To live and thrive for them,
Why must I not try?
