To a Friend

By Urbija Goswami

Bathed in the sweet afternoon light,
Sways the buttercups in autumnal delight,
And there the river cascades down,
While the green lane descends to town.

There the lilies dance in the august wind,
Still stands the mango tree determined,
And seems these old blue hills,
Speak to me of summer bliss.

This is the place where we bade goodbye,
Our faces blue against the orange sky,
While the fragile light and golden boughs,
Had played shadows on the ground.

In the broken light now as I stand,
I call to you dear friend,
Like those songs by the winter fire,
Calling you home since forever.

But our love will always be the same,
Tender as the scented rain,
And forever and ever till the river flows,
Our love shall go on.
