Through My Eyes

By Vallari Jha

How can you miss home, when you never knew what one felt like?
Because you had to fight,
All your life.
From when you were a little kid who had to see things,
Unbearing and disturbing,
To giving up your dreams.

Who do you run to,
When you don’t know what it feels like to be held?
Because you didn’t get it where you were born,
And neither from where you went.

Who shall you share your sorrows with,
If the only sorrows you have are from your dearest friends?
Bent and broken, yet again,
Carrying it all ever since.

But I see you.
Every single day.
How you laugh and try to light up the day.
Because you never let it dim your light,
Hold you back, or make you sigh.

You pass this wisdom to me,
Something I shall carry, always.
"Never stop chasing your dreams"
Is what you said to me.
But Mom, how do I tell you—
You’ve always been my biggest victory?

To be someone who gets to see,
How you rose from the ashes,
To become a queen.
If you could only see yourself through my eyes,
Maybe then you’d realize
The fire and grace that in you lies.

How you fought every single day,
The greyest things that came your way.
I wouldn’t change a line
In the story of your life—
Except maybe the aching parts, born out of strife.

But you’re a strong woman,
Always have been.
And now, you have a home—
Right within.
