Think Again

By Aeman Saba Syeda

And then again,
think once more —
who's the real monster?
Who's the worst one?

Do we fear the ones we should,
or are we blind?
Blind to the mask,
to the façade,
to the beautiful clothing of humanity.

How is it that you never once thought —
who's the worst one?
Who's the scary one?

Is it the witches,
or the ones who bound their hands,
lit the flames,
and watched them scream?

Is it the darkness we fear,
or the ones who wear light like a crown,
hiding their shadows beneath?

Are the monsters the beasts in the woods,
hid in the woods all quiet,
or the ones who called the hunt —
hunt for no reason at all,
drawing blood with their "righteous" knives?

As they say, demons are tempting and pretty.
Who's the real demon here?

So, tell me now —
who’s more terrifying?
The witches in the stories,
or the storytellers who made them villains?
