By Radhika Mehrotra
Adorned in jewels of embellished gemstones and gold,
and clothed in splendid silk,
she sits near the balustrades,
facing the path that overlooks the enchanted sea.
As she stifles all her major concerns into the water,
she finds solace in nature’s divinity.
“What could I have done to receive such blight for a feeble and innocent sin?”
Lanky shadows move across the shore, as the sun prepares for its retreat.
“And what was your sin?” proceeds the whirlpool of energy.
The water is alive.
The sea harbours power and prowess-
to either bring upon precious life,
or,
to conjure hazardous feats.
“I pledged faithfulness to a man who preferred to deceive me.”
“A lowly teenage mistake, it seems.”
“No. I chose to believe what I heard from his verbal retaliation, despite being aware of my pre-existing gullibility!
I sinned against myself, for I have been unfaithful to my very own boundaries.”
The entity breathed a jaded sigh,
and flowed out a persistent gush of cool,
reminiscent of an orbit circling around the curvature of a fanciful mountain.
It halted, and presented itself in front of the young fool.
“When the sun dwells upon the horizon, you seem to not hold any pointless fixations.
Yet, as it departs, so do you-into a trance that isn’t truly your own.
Is it a troubling sickness?
Or is it innate melancholy?
No, it is simply your lack of availability and empathy towards yourself — and no one else.”
“But it would be easier if I had him-”
“To realize the importance of self-love?
For that, you must first search within!”
But she was assured that, for once,
she would find her person.
After all,
in tender teenage years,
the most prominent fairy tales were said to befall.
In fragile youth,
we preach the most affectionate love sermons.
“Once you begin to crave a prosperous future full of growth-emotional and beyond-you shall also find the person
who fancies you along life’s complicated choreography,
taking you out of this delusional trance and leading you towards transcendent love and its consistency.”
“What is his name?
I beg you to spare me his first initial at least!”
The entity avoided her gaze, just as it averted her query.
“When it is time for love to flourish in your life,
your uniqueness shall add to you-and your person.
But when you sabotage your sincere critics,
and disguise yourself under an unrequited veil-
that is when you commit such avoidable sins.
Suffer due penance for now.
And soon, child, it will be time for you to lift this veil.”
The poem whirlpools sermon by poet ms radhika mehrotra tells us that a young girl hopes to find true love whos inspired by fairy tales she believed in during her teenage years. She is told that real love starts with loving herself and growing as a person and when she asks who her future partner is rhe mysterious figure refuses to tell her. Instead it warns her that hiding behind false love and false hope will only bring pain andsuffering. If she learns from her previous mistakes and becomes true to herself then real love will come to you in no time.
