The View from a Classroom

By Tasneem Khan

Come visit us for a day
come with your temper and your troubles
your gruffness and your gloom intact, I don’t mind
for if you stand in a classroom, you are sure to
be attacked
by joy
its mouth wide open
not in the manner of a baby with
drooling gums and soft smooches
more in the manner of a beast
ferocious, jagged teeth exposed
slicing you open
leaving you completely exposed
defenseless, defeated at the very outset
leaving you with an ache
for more.
