The Planner’s Dilemma

By Subhasree Subhasmita

The itineraries we made,
The plans that failed,
The journeys that led
To destinations we never dreamt.

The breeze of winter
And in depth we converse
The before-after of arrival,
And plans went in reverse.

The wanderer in me stood still,
at your place.
The mind travelled miles
Without moving an inch of space.

The bottle of whiskey and an unknown glance,
The choice between law and discord at chance.
Three nights to live and four days to roam,
Battles of mind and yearning to be home.

The blurred view and hushed voice,
Silence on terrace and Hobson’s choice.
The comfort of known and calmer tone,
Concealed the fear of everything unknown.

Brush of arms in narrow lanes,
Paths never seen and people strange.
Rested on shoulder your tired head,
Off-beat songs and the “Jinx” you played.

Reached my phone and looked at map,
All places unchecked as I took a glance.
The evening grew dark,
As I recalled all landmarks.

A cozy couch. A wooden bench.
The shared jacket. The Café French.
The shared tears of pain and joy.
He thought I left in rush,
But Cheesecakes in fridge for that little 5-year boy.

Deleted the plan for which I came.
Memorized in heart 42 frame by frame.
Riddikulus, he talked with expressions in eyes,
Alexa! IF EVER we meet next time,
Will he still remember the name?
