The Palm Artist

Ashwarya Agarwal

If I could stroke away distress..
 I'd paint you my affections
Trace your godly palm, with delectations
Instead, I draw those minutely carved terrains..
I see how water slips and drains

Out of the fluvial forms, along the thenar
At times driven to cross even the palmar
How the stream tussles about the margins
And weaves, a way to open ends

I can tell a palm apart
And this one, it's no usual art
 There's a picturesque story unfolding
Of great valour and permanent loss, equally saddening

The intricate terraces in the ridges of your palm,
Guarding the ring, even from miles apart
Just that way, the valleys in between and sometimes ravines, leave lonely a mount to claim
Five a chasms to the peaks, rules three a moirai of the greek

But the toughest to brush, will be those droughted lands
Patches parched, with sickened soil and slipping sands
I am impelled to nurture them with my viscous touch
But I am assumed to sketch, and watch just as much

So observe, I do, the withered surface of your palm
Concealed my conclusions, of your ghastly perils, like a consecrated psalm,
With a hope, my depiction is then acceptable to you
To perceive it just enough, not to fear that
Now I know them well, too...

  • The poem isn’t just delicately painting the soft and nubile palms of a maiden… but metaphorically connects human palm to mother earths extended palm of landscapes, mountains, rivers connecting their unfortunate ravaging with fate telling…that often culminates into Harsil like tragedies. Sublime metaphor of palm artist is to absorbed with an imaginative mindset.

  • Wonderful Art and wonderful description.
Nice comparison of Topography of palms with that of our mother earth.
I, being from Geosciences back ground can see the terminology used matches well with our description of inner and outer variation of different Geo-horizons of earth.
Excellent work of art and poetry.
    Please keep it up.
    Best Wishes.
