The Mountain Peak

By Aritra Ray

Frail with fatigue, numb and freezing
On and on I climb up this mount
Icy winds roar, blinding my eyes –
Suddenly your face I recount
Those beautiful, knowing brown eyes
Strengthen me, from pain set me free
Yet at last when I reach the peak,
Will I see you? (Will you see me?)

My fate was sealed the day I vowed
To scale the highest peak on earth.
The day I left you, dear mate, to
Chase my dream and prove my worth,
Dazzle the world with my success.
Your radiant smile wished me glory
Yet at last when I reach the peak,
Will I see you? (Will you see me?)

Up I glance – a huge avalanche!
Pummeled by cruel snow, my hand slips –
I fall through empty space, ready to
Embrace death, your name on my lips …
But land on a ledge, while many die
Your prayers, who else could it be?
Yet at last when I reach the peak,
Will I see you? (Will you see me?)

Beneath a lovely rose-gold dawn,
Finally, I reach the summit!
Waves of euphoria flood my soul
As the world looks up at my feat.
Yet crave those eyes, that face I left –
Will I hear that laugh, wild and free?
Standing on this peak of success,
Will I see you? (Will you see me?)
