In the midst of a farm,
stood an impoverished, covetous man
who would’ve never prophesied
his haunting voyage ahead.
He once saw a dollar bill
fly among the birds and the daffodils;
he saw it fly past the places and people he loved
the trees, the barn, his beloved and his family.
Without a doubt, he chased it by,
and he heard his children wail for him;
but all he did was scoff and glare
to resume chasing the unattainable dollar bill.
The dollar bill was lost,
and the hour was dark;
the night sky approached hauntingly
he had gone astray from his sweet little home.
He saw a black case
lying forebodingly in the midnight sky;
without a second thought,
he grasped it in his hands.
He ran for his dear life while clutching the case
he opened it and found gleaming jewels;
he wore the jewellery and trinkets
and grinned with loftiness and pride.
Soon, a moment later,
his vanity vanished
as quickly as it had come
he felt empty though he was packed.
He clutched his children’s clothes and wept,
until the morning sun pierced his eyes
he had lost his priceless life
for overpriced trifles.
He looked back at the winding road
and searched for his way back home
only to realise that he had lost it
a very long time ago.
