The MahaKumbh Festival

By Manu Vaish

The Kumbh is said to wash away all sins,
Granting salvation and freeing us
From bad karma's grasp within.
But is this truly so?

Will those who commit evil deeds
Simply take a dip,
And then return to their wicked ways,
With a clean slate to rip?
Can they approach the divine,
With hearts still filled with malice?

Consider the ascetic,
Who spent years in meditation and prayer,
Renouncing worldly desires,
Seeking enlightenment, without a care.
But upon returning from the Himalayas,
Pride and arrogance took hold,
Looking down upon others,
With a sense of superiority to unfold.

Can anger and arrogance win divine love?
Is immortality achieved through
Such an approach,
Sent from above?

Some showcase their powers,
Gained through years of practice and dedication,
Leaving onlookers amazed and surprised,
With eyes wide with admiration.

But the divine thinks, "What are you doing?
I love simplicity and true feeling."

No display of power, talent,
Or knowledge
Can influence the divine—
Only a pure heart, free from artificiality,
Kindness, empathy, and a willingness to shine.

The one who works hard,
Helps others selflessly,
Without desire for wealth or fame,
Remains untouched by worldly lures,
And finds immortality in their simple, humble name.

They take a bath, not in the Ganges,
But in the waters of kindness and compassion,
And attain immortality,
Not through rituals,
But through their selfless devotion.
