The Leaf and the Dew – Delhi Poetry Slam

The Leaf and the Dew

By Abhik Dutta

Was it now or was it then,
When we were together in the lap of passing time, which was Eden?
As you separated, trudging on an unknown path,
Settling down beyond my gaze—
There I remained, transfixed,
Absorbing the wrath, awestruck by this cruel raze."

Squeaked the leaf with a shivering whimper,
For the fallen drop of dew gushed over it with a gentle whisper.

How easy it is to be one in a moment
And then separate in the next, bearing it all alone—
As if the dew and the leaf
Were always to each other unknown.

Dedicated to all leaves swaying in the air,
Moving on, shedding the dew
Just like it was never there.

  • I love the tenderness of the emotions on display here. We are but one, connected strands of atoms, one moment together, the next separated and yet, everything will become one again, when the separation becomes too painful – the universe will collapse into the Singularity.

  • I really liked how you used the leaf and dew to show how people come close and then move apart. It was simple but very powerful.

Your writing is soft and poetic. It flows nicely and made me think deeply. I especially liked the line about “the lap of passing time, which was Eden.”

You have a gift for writing. This poem is touching, and I hope you keep sharing more of your work.
