The King and Queen

By Rachel Sitling

I'm scared of clowns and scrambled eggs.
One has on a colourful mask,
The other — I can't seem to tell them apart.
My eyes seem to wander around,
But my heart seems to be fixated on you.
The King and Queen that we are.

Fly towards me on a big air balloon,
And I'll hop on a paper boat to come to you.
An umbrella for a roof,
And love as food
The King and Queen that we are.

But we still hover around, hungry.
You have the sun wrapped around your finger,
The mysterious and scarred full moon is all mine.
We shall dance like time is on our side,
Then slowly retreat among the clowns.
And if we are still hungry,
I'll be glad to make you some scrambled eggs.
Oh, the King and Queen that we are!

Our thoughts collide, but our worlds don't.
The realisation is yet to overwhelm us.
Until then, shall we dance together for one last time?
The King and Queen that we are.

Flawless are our days and nights.
Paperweights can't hold us down.
We walk on fire and ice.
Throw away our burdens,
Laugh until our tears form rivers.
We will bottle some of it
Because, why can't we?
The King and Queen that we are.

We will dance our way through dark dungeons.
What are cannonballs and minefields
When we have the fireflies to ourselves?
How many were slain before us?
The straight road will eventually end
So will the crooked roads.
But the world will still make us choose.
The King and Queen that we are.
