The Idea of Him

By Meghna Upadhyay

When he whispered, "I love you," with tears in his eyes that night,
I knew I’d miss him even after he got on that flight.
Knew he was gonna leave from the start,
But the kisses, the flowers, and the random showers of love
Got me off reality,
Took me inside a bubble called
The idea of him.
There, there, I left my sanity.
In here, we were the best couple ever.
In here, we shared the deepest secrets ever.
Those beach walks and ice cream after my wisdom tooth removal—
He looked like a guy who got the universe’s approval.
Now that I think of it, along with the tooth,
Wisdom actually left my body.
Got all romantic and dreamy—
He made other people want to be us,
Made all hot girls at the party jealous of me.
Our stories were all straight out of movies,
He made me say, “The girl who’s going to end up with you is gonna be so lucky.”
And you said, “Maybe this girl could be you, you know.”
Soon, we were seven seas apart.
Dry conversations couldn’t dry my tears for him.
Late texts, forced laughter, and fake promises—
I thought it was just part of long-distance relationships.
I’d think if your heart had a tiny spot for me,
I’d stay there and pay rent for it.
I thought when you said, “I love you,” you meant it.
Then one day, a pin called reality came in,
Took me off my Disney princess shoes,
Kidnapped me away from you,
Brought me closer to the truth.
And a pin called reality
Burst the bubble called
The idea of him.
