The Ethereal Melody

By Moitreyee Esh Choudhury

Bury me in the flower field
Among a thousand daisies
That you can look at to know that
Things just might always stay crazy.
It just might never be fine, otherwise,
You wouldn’t see me here today -
In an eternal, peaceful sleep
Among hawthorn trees and blossoming Mays.
You would see me, then, in this
Very field, under the sun,
Spending away summer in bliss
Living ordinarily, like everyone.
You would see me, then, on
The moist and marshy riverside
Gathering lilies and other wilds
That my eyes could find.
You would see me, then, with
Golden coneflowers in my hands
Throwing them to the skies in tribute
For being one of my best friends.
You would see me, then, with
Red poppies flowing down my hair
Singing melodies of happiness
While my pains I struggled to bear.
You would see me, then, stringing
Lavender bellflowers into garlands
To wear them round my neck
And find some solace hence.
You would see me, then,
Collecting irises to keep
Inside pages of my diaries and books
Which also hold tears when I weep.
People left and failed me
In the last of my days,
But my books, skies, blossoms
And nature – they stayed.
Then again the sunflowers
Turned their heads to face the sun,
To remind me of the summer I had
Missed out on; and also the fun.
The leaves were fading colours.
Because fall was creeping closer,
And how the winds blew all day
Meant that winter was by the corner.
But even on wintry mornings
When on grass blades, there'll be drops of dew –
The flower field where my body will lay
Would bloom and blossom with varying hues.
