The dream – Delhi Poetry Slam

The dream

By Philomel Roy

I woke up in your arms
As the glaring sunrays hit my eyelids..
The frown that arrived with it...
Disturbed my dream of the enchanted house

The walls were filled with our laughter
The staircase with pictures of us at different phases of our lives
I particularly loved one of them
 Yes
The one you took at the mall post-lunch
 Before leaving for the airport.
 yes
 That one
Which you made into a WhatsApp sticker.
And sent it to me time and again.

 A dream within a dream
 Remember inception
 The dream broke
 The harsh sunlight stayed...
 The laughter gone
 The walls were empty...
Like the one in my heart

I feel a strange fluttering these days
Doc says my heartbeat is normal...
Then what is this beat about...
The sound rings in my ear.
He told me to check with a therapist.

 I write to you...
in the pages of my diary
Things I want to tell you but can't.

You say, "Nothing has changed between us."
 Yet I feel the gap
The gap between the two fast heartbeats
 Minuscule yet present...

I was asked to take long walks to exhaust my body
 Sleep comes faster then
 So,
  I aimlessly roam the roads
 Sometimes
Stopping at the hotel where you stayed once
 I looked up
Trying to find the window through which we used to watch the metro pass by
Lying on the bed in the evenings.

 I walk back home
 Exhausted
It's time to pop those pills
 To go back to sleep
 To dream
 Maybe this time
 I will find
 a happy ending.
 Or
 The island of eternal sleep.
