Soup

By Raaya Zaman

I wanted to eat boiled chicken for dinner.
And have them watch me as I,
Pick at the bones and slurp the soup.
Make a mess of my hands and not use a spoon.
Make them watch me as I lick my fingers and savour every bite.
I wanted to be with you.
And have you watch me as I,
Pick all the wildflowers and wish on the ladybugs.
Make a mess of my knees and not mind the wind.
Make you watch me as I lick your fingers and kiss your wrists.
I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs.
And have the world watch me as I,
Pick at my wounds and dig into my skin.
Make a mess of my face and not sit quietly.
Make the world watch me as I lick my lips and let out a sigh.
I wanted to leave but I wanted all to bear witness to my tears.
Leave a dent.
That I was here.
And that I was sad.
