Raising Them, Raising You – Delhi Poetry Slam

Raising Them, Raising You

By K Maya

Bringing them into this world was your desiderate choice.
Thus, feel honoured to raise them with adequate poise.
You birth them, and at the same time, they birth you,
So gear up for your first time and become a person anew.
No one on this earth is flawless
So growing along with your children makes you no less.
The guarding grip ought to be elastic and loose,
For none would choose to be choked by the tightened noose.
Ensuring that there's enough room for your kids to breathe
Despite keeping them ensheathed
Is a virtue to be carried with insight and grace,
For which the li'l ones owe you no fees anyways.
Having their back at every juncture of life is crucial,
Yet, letting them be in the driving seat is ideal.
Although it is alright to chide them so as to rightly guide,
Their peccadilloes, are not to be embarrassingly magnified.
They deserve to be nurtured with love and care
Rather than being troubled by dominion and with scare.
Offering them a safe space to articulate their emotions
Would enable them to flourish in all dimensions.
The solution to get rid of your frustration
Isn't making a scapegoat out of those who can't question.
Undoing your mistakes isn't their duty,
For, to be frivoled away, life isn't entitled to eternity.
Accomplishing your dreams isn't their purpose to any degree,
For they have only one life yearning for them to live free.
Instead of longing that they follow the path beaten by you,
Let them lay a new avenue –
For they are animate beings born with the faculty to think
And not inanimate robots to act, at all times, in a mechanical sync;
For then, there will be no moving forward,
And a book is never read backward.
