Our worst enemy

By Annie Chopra

People don’t like it when we become friends
With our own worst enemy,
The one that lives in our head.

Well, why would they?
The enemy benefits them.
They don’t have to tear us down
If we do it to ourselves so well.

Oh yes, the mirror is just the start,
You look skinny, you look fat-
Then it delves deeper, thicker into the skin,
You are worthless, it screams, anything for it to win.

But you have the control,
You are not in its hands.

You might not see it,
But it’s not a labyrinth.

It’s an open door, you can leave as you wish.

It might be hard at first, but once you learn the way, you are off the leash.

So stop listening to it,
The hateful voice,
It does nothing for you
Except take you to an endless void.

You are beautiful the way you are,
You are worthy, you are a star.

Believing is hard at first,
Listening to the friend not the foe.

But do it enough and you know,
Friendship is so much nicer, than the hatred you reap and sow.
