My Grandmother's Hands – Delhi Poetry Slam

My Grandmother's Hands

By Sohini Trehan

My first and forever love

She showed my body

The true feeling of tenderness

When I think of her

Memories, moments, words

All somehow merge into one

Feeling within my heart

And a lump in my throat

The softness of her being

Is everything that is love

And her hands are what

Stay the clearest in my soul's memory

Her hands hold so many stories

Of a life lived with love

Stories of deaths and rebirths

Stories of joys and traumas

Stories of survival and strength

As my daughter asks me once again

To tell her more about my grandmother

I take her hands in mine and smile softly

Grateful for my first and forever love.
