Mother's Lens

By Moushumi Sharma

Dear world, I come to you
With a prayer and folded hands
Do you have a minute to see
Through a mother’s lens?

Long ago I planted the seeds
Of a love pure and sweet,
That love bore fruit in the form of a baby girl
Whom one day you’ll have the good fortune to meet.

She’s beautiful and bold, kind and strong
And has a heart of gold,
In my eyes, she’s one in a million
A thousand hearts she can hold.

I’ve poured my heart and soul into raising her
I’ve seen her fears and dreams,
She’s special in oh-so-many ways
And looks like an angel when she beams.

Her heart holds a love deep and true
For people, animals and nature alike,
She’s a gentle flower in the garden of the earth
Please let her bloom, please don’t strike.

She deserves possibilities and peace
And so does every other kid you know,
Will you be kind to her, dear world
And give her a chance to rise and grow?

I carried her within me for nine long months
And made sure she stayed warm and safe
Will you do the same for her
Even though she herself is brave?

As she walks out the door of my home
Into a world full of strangers and noise,
Can this mother breathe a little easy
Knowing she made the right choice?

I’m giving you a piece of my heart
In the hope that she can find her own path,
But please let her do so without fear
Don’t stop her before she can start.

Let her chase the stars and follow the moon
Run with the wildflowers or dig some pearl
Don’t tell her ‘no’ and break her spirit
Only because she’s a girl.

Let her be fearless and loud
For I’ve taught her to roar and not cry,
She can cross mountains and seas
All she needs to do is try.

I may not be with her forever
But my love and blessings will always be,
Dear world, please be kind to my daughter
She is God’s most precious gift to me.
