Kerosene – Delhi Poetry Slam

Kerosene

By Indu Prasad

Kerosene coursing through my vein
Cariprazine, I weep in vain
Caress me, slowly, I'm in pain,
Care to see me, before I go insane?

Sertraline, my Prince charming
Why is the world spinning?
Dopamine, carefree darling,
Where are you hiding?

Biohazard, I'm lying haphazard
Cold like a blizzard
A failed bard, a frail bird,
Wing-less, my screams unheard

Quetiapine, I can't sleep
Lie by me, caress me
Kiss me, undress me
I'm yours, yours to keep

Sing me an eternal lullaby,
One last goodbye
No more tears left to cry
This flightless bird's soaring high

I want to slip into the deepest slumber
And wake up in December
Oh, love, do you remember,
Dancing in the rain and thunder?

“Who are you talking about?”
The jealous pills shout
“You and only you”, back I shout
“Would a man dare touch me with you around?”

Blood on the sheet, I hiss
“Whose blood is this?”
Swords jab at me and miss
No, they are needles

Lithium, hold me close
My old friend, my toxic rose
I feel your mighty force
The dreamy poetry to my dry prose

They keep warning me
Of too much, of your toxicity
But what can you do to me
That I haven't done to myself already?

The wretch has retched it all,
Pills escape drown the drain, this is my downfall
What am I, when I'm alone with my thoughts?
Will I go insane? Will I lose it all?

They slap my vein, can't get me to bleed
Honey, I told you it's all kerosene
Believe me, This is no movie scene
See, there's no green screen

They give up and rise
Tears cascade down my eyes
The room fills with my cries
Mother starts with her lies

“I won't let them hurt you”
She strokes my weary head too
“We'll be home soon”
“We'll be home soon”

After all these years, don't you see?
The only antidepressant you really need,
Is standing in a crumpled nighty
Next to you, ready to fight and bleed”

Yes, doctor, but this is what I hate,
She too has an expiry date
Maybe this is my fate
Only pills; no parent, no mate

Kerosene, I'm done with your lies
Now there's a fire in my eyes
Kerosene, one day I'll rise
until then don your disguise

Kerosene, burn me at the stake
Kerosene, For both of our sake,
Kerosene, My sanity’s at stake
Kerosene, You were a mistake.
