Intimate Stranger

By Radhika Shah

I turned around to get a clearer view,
Balancing my toes on one another
Holding my lover's hand as the crowd grew,
I adjusted my gaze to look further

I saw you talking to the friends I knew
scratching your eyebrow like you always do
I saw you look around and then at me
And suddenly you were in no hurry

And then I saw the spring and the fall
The times when we had it all
I saw your dark brown hair
And I saw our favourite chair
I saw you, I saw me
And all the other things that could be

Now we stand ten feet apart,
With an uneasy smile and a confused heart
Now we stand with all odds in our favour
And I look at you as the intimate stranger.
