Grand Maa

By Gargi Banerjee

Sarees tumbled down—on the cold, hard floor—
Amongst them peeped out, oh! It made my heart soar.
The bright yellow silk was right there before me;
The zari border—the purple flowers—my heart danced with glee.

The perfume wafted, sweet and fragrant—
Was that jasmine? That beautiful scent
She wore each day as she moved about—
The big old house was full of life, and the maids would shout!

Flowers bloomed, the birds flew by—
It was such a beautiful sight to the eye.
Dusk settled in, the sky turned pink;
I saw her sitting quietly, watching the sun slowly sink.

All the children came and sat down with a smile,
Now stories she would tell to keep them awake for a while.
As I looked up at the wall, she looks down, her eyes bright—
Grandma, where are you now? For the world, it gives me a fright!
