Freedom's Mirage

By Shweta Debnath

In the land of the free, I'm not free to roam,
A prisoner of fear, in my own home.
The brave fought for liberty's flame,
But it flickers dim, in the dark of shame.

Independence echoes, a hollow refrain,
As I hide my face, and forever sustain
The weight of silence, the burden of pain—
A life lived in shadows, where fear reigns.

Is this the freedom that was meant to be?
A dream deferred, a mirage for me?
Where safety's a luxury, and peace a test,
And the brave words of freedom are just a guess.

I'll hold my head high, but my heart will mourn
For the independence that's yet to be born—
Where every girl, every woman can stand,
Free from fear, free from chains, in this promised land.

  • Truly grateful for this feature! I had submitted this piece quite a while ago and had almost forgotten about it — so this came as the most beautiful surprise. Thank you so much for this opportunity and encouragement!
