Forgotten Flight

By Saachi Oberoi

“Icarus keep dreaming high,
You will touch the sun- take our advice.”
I’ll keep grinding, for then I will shine;
the feat will finally fill the void inside.

“Keep your head down and keep working, Icarus.
You are a prodigy, so fulfil your purpose”
This is my purpose, what I was made for-
I’ll finally make my dad proud.

“Icarus, you are oh so close.
Just this one thing will etch your name in gold”
I’m finally ready to take the flight,
With the wings of wax, head held high.

“Icarus is the hero, society’s ideal boy.
Be more like him, the paradigm”
Oh no! the wings are melting now.
I’m falling! Oh the plummet!
Please help me somehow.

Oh voices, where are you when I need your aid?
Won’t you break my fall and save the boy you made?
……

“Foolish Icarus, so vain and blind.
The fall was inevitable; he was never meant for the limelight.”

[Icarus is dead, but society moves on,
Seeking its next golden boy, the next scapegoat.]
