Ephemeral Rainforest

By Shivani Murugesan

Once a desert became a rainforest
by your glance, creating a Disney world.
Our thoughts synced,
our hearts strummed
like a pick against strings.
Conscience kept saying, this is a fairy tale-
but my mind, just this once, thought it magic
when everything aligned,
I dreamed of being Marvel.

Through one scorching day,
my mind laughed from the corner,
eyes barely open as my heart bled-
Once a desert, always a desert-
it changed the moment the spell was lifted.

Like Juliet waiting at her balcony
for a love the stars had doomed too soon-
I stood, unheard by fate,
whispering sonnets to a vanishing moon.

For fate, as ever, was Nolan and ever Stan Lee.
Now, rewinding back to the beginning,
questioning existence, fate, God...
Why, if we're meant to sink, only the Titanic?
