Defeat, Defeat, Oh Defeat

By Jhangir Hassan

Defeat, defeat, oh defeat,
It is in you that I found the freedom I so desperately seeked;
Trickery was in triumph that made me think otherwise,
Or was it the world that made a fool out of me?

Defeat, defeat, oh defeat,
The journey had begun to avoid you at all cost,
The journey was set to cross paths with triumph at all cost—
But little did I know that you two were neighbors to a coin with no cost!

Defeat, defeat, oh defeat,
I was conditioned to be fearful of you,
But cheerful of your neighbor—
Fearful I became so much of you that even cheerful I couldn’t be when I was without you!

Defeat, defeat, oh defeat,
It was in such triumphs that I learned the truth about you:
You are neither a friend nor a foe—
But only a possibility for a teary eye and a broken heart though.

Defeat, defeat, oh defeat,
You are the end and the beginning depending upon how I see you though!
