Dear mother

By Purvi Jangbahadur

Dear mother, tell me one thing,
Did I mean anything to you, or was I just… a thing?
Why did you make me come alive?
When you never mean for me to thrive?
Do you remember the day I was born–
Was it joy, or was it mourned?

Dear mother, why did a daughter make you frown?
while other mothers spun their girls around.
All I have ever ached for is your love-
But now I watch you be there for your Dove.
You smiled so wide with my brother,
But denied me the right to call you “mother”.

Dear mother, can you justify your crime?
You gave yourself to motherhood, never to mine
Can't you give me just one chance
So that I too could rejoice and dance
I know you think that I might be mad
But please, Mom– can I have those memories, I was never allowed to had?
