Clipped Bird

By Shaheena Akhtar

While walking on a street,
I came upon a sight-strange..
A heavenly bird in a muddy ditch.
The bird helplessly looked at me;
I felt his pain and deep misery.

I helped him out, and he horribly cried-
His wings had broken, he was in pain.
I asked him, "Why? What made you cry?"
With his eyes down, he slowly whispered:

It was none other than my own friend.
He led the way, and I followed him.
Together we flew in skies high.
But he left me behind, I lost my track-
An unknown fear painted black.
I closed my eyes and opened them here,
In deep muddy ditch, dark despair.
Now that you have come to my rescue,
My life is back and I have to live...
But what a pity-without my wings.
