Chitter-Chatter

By Tanu Priya Sharma

Chitter-chatter all around,
Today, again I wonder where I belong.
Why are they so happy? What are they laughing about?
Are they pretending? Are they performing?
Do they carry the same sadness around?

I cried silently, hoping to hear the sadness in their laugh—
In loud cackles, in small giggles, and in their eyes.
Maybe their eyes will tell me the truth,
Will show me the same sorrow I carry.
Maybe in their eyes,
I will see a glimpse of spaces where I belong.

Chitter-chatter all around,
Today, again I wonder where I belong.
