Amber

By Jagriti Dubey

A little boy standing on street,
clothes tattered and bare feet,
frail body and freckles on cheeks,
a fragile arm holding a bunch of balloons,
the other holding his baby sister, so sweet.

His face had an undaunted smile,
that was gracefully mocking the burden
put down by life,
with hope in his eyes,
he was taming the hunger that had accompanied
him since last night.

Standing in the scorching Sun,
politely asking every passerby, if they could buy one.
Being brutally spurn by some,
he had help from no one.
His faith becoming firmer after every denial,
just by glancing the little one for a while.

Holding the hand of his mother,
a boy passed gurning at him,
oblivious, he wondered if someone could also
hold his hand and
buy him a candy stick.

With sun leaving and a penniless patched pocket,
he looked up to the sky and prayed for some magic!
Opening his eyes, he cheered with happiness,
when a passerby gave him a week-old loaf packet.
Happily, the little one ate,
and he fed his crumbling stomach with her smile,
lying down in his frayed blanket,
he pretended to sleep for a while.

Lost in finding an answer,
to what he will be, when he grows older?
He suddenly felt a touch on his shoulder,
turning around, he saw a man tall and stout,
dressed impeccably and set out from crowd.

Smiling the man gave him a basket filled with snacks,
candies and chocolates,
awestruck the boy was as they were countless!
Tears rolling down his cheeks, he hugged the man tight,
surprising the boy with balloons, the man whispered,
everyone deserves to be treated right.

While bidding him goodbye, the boy had his answer,
and looking up he realized,
the dark sky had now turned amber!
