All the World's a Stage

By Agreja Nair P

A loud clank,
And the curtains slowly ascend,
Casting the neonatal
Into the show of life.

Hopping to the rhythm
Set by others,
Like puppets,
It slowly commences.

The strings attached
Pave the way for
Unreasoned pleasing of others-
With smiles and sorrows,
And anything and everything.

Betraying the ones around,
And at times, heartbroken,
Yet you remain the same,
Living the role
You never asked for,
Never acknowledging
The chameleons around.

Forever stunned
By the cluster of illusionists.
Uplifting at times,
Whilst others,
Thrusting us into
The wells of disgust.

Another loud clank,
And the curtains slowly descend,
As the charade ends,
And we are what we played.

Applauded or criticized
By the crowd.
As we descend permanently,
We watch them,
Reciprocating,
Performing their honest script-
Only to realize
That we never lived,
As the strings were never
Detached,
Forever etched in the skin,
Into our greed
To please others.
