A Precious Life

By Bushra Khan

Ali hastens homeward, a sense of urgency in his stride.
His wife's words on the phone: "Get home quick, the kids are hungry."
He boards the bus, gazing out nonchalantly,
Unaware of the approaching group.
Oh, how blind could he be?

Amidst all the passengers, their eyes settled on the skull-capped man.
Seizing him by the collar, they dragged him from his seat.
Assuming his forbidden baggage, they unleashed their rage and heat.
Keener than dogs, they sniffed with great intensity—
His innocent flesh became their enemy.

Tragically, they lynched him, extinguishing his breath.
Their hearts filled with pride as blood dripped upon his death.
To verify their suspicions, tests were then performed,
Revealing he carried only meat, unjustly held and misinformed.

His wife and kids waited at home, prepping for lunch to have it together.
Little did they know, he had paid with his life
For the simple act of existing in peace.
