A Name

By Elaine Valoris

Millions of light years away,
There is an argument happening,
"I am the heaviest", "No, I am",
Clumps of the same cluster, now divided,
Fighting over who's heftier.

From argument to quarrel, turned riot,
"Do you see a sense?", "Nonsense!",
Again, continued the scuffle...
Bam! Came flying a few crumbles,
For what had happened was a collision,
From two made one, now combined, massive,
Bam! Bam! Bam! Two-to-one to many-to-one,
Yet again, the universal pull has won.

But gone was not all,
For born out of this was a baby star.

Small in age but not in weight,
The baby star starts to gaze,
It sees red and it sees grey,
Then its eyes fell on an astray.
What it saw was a planet in this mesh,
Blue as a sapphire, radiant and fresh.
"But why is it so blurry and inexact?".
Thought the star with dreamy eyes,
Starts to burn up in yearning for sight.

Little by little, day by day,
The burning star starts to blaze.
And as it blazed, its vision cleared,
Misty was once, and now is acicular.
Is it blue? Is it turquoise?
"Who cares! For all I see is its poise."
Exclaimed the baby, now in the main sequence.

"Who are those that roam this planet?"
"Are they rocks or are they comets?"
But wait,
Eyes to see and nose to breathe,
Their mouth is trying to speak,
Mumble-mumble is all it hears,
The little star starts to fear,
"Am I not worthy of their sounds?"
"Or are my senses yet to arouse?"

Still burning bright, it fuels up more,
The little star intensifies its glow.
With a glow so bright that now it sees,
That which roams the planet is humanity.
Praising the stars is what they chime,
"That is Sirius! That is Rigel!"
"And to the north is our polar guide"

"Oh! They see us! Hi Hi Hi!"
"What do you call me in this paradigm?"
"Am I a Blix? Am I a Bruto?"
"Name me anything but Dimbo."
To this it waited patiently,
For someone to point and sing the melody.

Days went by and weeks passed,
Night after night, there was a new cast.
"I am here! I am here!",
Not a cry crossed their ears.
"Possibly it is, they don't see"
"The reason behind could be me!"
"Oh! I will burn and I will blaze",
"Just so that I can reach their gaze".

A resolve so firm that diamonds fail,
The little star set ablaze.
Now burning bright, light reaching far,
"Now, can you see me from afar?"
To which it heard,
"That is Sirius! That is Rigel!"
"And at the top is our polar gem."

Saddened by this disregard,
The little star wept for hours.
"They see him, and they see her,"
"Then why am I left off this stir?"
Burning so hot, temperature thus wild,
He turned angry to deride.
"Am I ignoble? Am I out of place?",
"Or am I just born this way?"
Wailed and wailed, he shrilled for days,
But that to no avail.

Not knowing what to do and how to halt,
The little star scorched it all.
With no fuel left, no power anew,
That little star started his adieu -
"Why you see him and why you see her,
Spurning me, you little miser!
I burned and burned, for you to see,
Potentiality, I had, bet you agree.
Steamed it all, blood, sweat, and tears,
The ignorance is all I feared.
Withering away, no thus and thus,
My light will reach you, eventually, so hear my curse",
Coughed, no longer the little but the super giant,
Now not shining luminously bright.
"My light will reach you, and when it does,
It will shine brilliantly throughout your crust.
Be it dusk or be it dawn,
It will dazzle you forever long.
You will admiringly yearn to know,
Where is the source? How far does it go?
Naming me Conspicio, you'll try,
Only to find my rays to be a passerby."

When all was said, the red giant smiled,
Bidding adieu with teary eyes.
A sharp pain went by through its veins,
For there is an explosion, it patiently awaits.
Knowing its fate, I floated afar,
Saddened by its misery by far.
From my security, I could see,
The silent explosion, which took thee.
Oh! What a feeling, bitter sour,
For I was dazzled from this far.
The star which once shone brilliantly,
Lost to its nova, what a parody.

Dismantling away piece-by-piece,
The supernova began to cease.
From within the brightness, an object emerged,
It was the darkness which devoured.
Witnessing this, my heart sank further,
Mankind's oblivion turned a sweet soul monster.
The time it wasted, working hard,
Solely to spend its life in disregard.
Now what is left is but infame,
For all it desired was a name.
