A Glimmer

By Shruti Nimkar

I know I'm far from perfect,
But you’re my only hope.
You give me the strength to carry on,
You give me the strength to cope.
And when things get dark and twisty,
As they often tend to do,
You help me through the darkness
And see me safely through.

I know it isn’t fair to you—
Everyone wants a ‘normal’ child,
Who runs and jumps and laughs all day,
Who is naughty and cheerful and wild.
Instead, you are stuck with me—
It seems I just want to die.
But I'm working so hard to be better,
Believe me, I really try.

I wish I could just think positive thoughts,
I know I must learn to be strong.
I know if I learn to appreciate the little things,
Maybe I'll be happy and calm before long.
I know it's far from easy,
It seems like a difficult test.
But I won't ever give up—
I'll always do my best.

And then one day we’ll all realise
I was never flawed after all.
I wasn’t a burden or a liability—
Because you made sure I never felt small.
I've wanted to quit so many times,
You gave me the confidence to stay.
And it is all thanks to you
That I stand tall today.
