A Candle Light March – Delhi Poetry Slam

A Candle Light March

By Nandini Gupta

A candle light march
is that all she deserved?
she who had to muster courage for going to the city of hope and lights,
she who walked back home late at night,
she who had pepper spray in hand,
she who believed this city to be her home, her land.

A candle light march
is that all she deserved?
she who screamed for equality, but was never heard,
she whose talks of justice, were to others no more than just a word,
she who wanted to stand apart from the herd,
she whose tortures with a few tears can be blurred.

A candle light march
is that all she deserved?
she who is all of us,
she who is now forgotten,
she who is now just a lesson,
she for whom there will never be an action,
a candle light march
is that all she deserved?

(I was inspired by the many rape, murder, sexual assault cases in India for which justice has never been delivered, rather only a candle light march or a protest has occurred.)
