Youthful dreamer – Delhi Poetry Slam

Youthful dreamer

By Anaya Mukherjee

We try to keep up with life’s relentless heartbeat,
Always scared, terrified of tripping over our feet
As we march through life, we grow a little older
Maybe our smile widens, maybe it grows colder

With every year that passes, I grow a little bolder
But in the chase of tomorrow, sometimes I forget to hold her.

Hold onto that child, that youthful dreamer,
Her eyes set aflame, her heart alive with laughter so wild
If I look in the mirror, some days I’ll catch her.

And when I do, she calls out to me, like it’s a sign
Slowly, the tiny hand reaches to grab mine..
The pure spark in my former self’s eyes - oh, how could I decline?
And so I reach, but she disappears in the nick of time.

Why?
Because just like stars and just like some scars, these moments don’t last forever.
Memories get lost, and slowly fade away
Because life is a dance, a delicate ballet.
From cradle to grave, from night to day
There’s a childish spirit in you, calling you to play
To dance, to sing, to live for today.

So when you look in the mirror,
You may see someone else
A form of you from the past
A version that didn't last
One that held all the hope in the world,
And that’s why as we age, we mustn’t let the essence fade
The child within us, in whom dreams were made

So with all the birthday candles you blow
And in each and every way that you grow,
If the child in the mirror visits once again
For yourself, and for them

Reach for the stars, not caring how high
Because that child in you, with stories untold
Is watching eagerly, to see their dreams unfold.
