The Weight of Words

By Anjali Aggarwal

Ruthless and harsh, the people she saw,
Hurling words like they were little candy bombs,
Smiling and laughing like nothing was wrong,
Oh what have you done,
Do you even realise the weight of your own words?

She didn’t understand why they said those things,
The person in front of them seemed as broken as one can be,
What was the purpose of what they were doing,
Was it to feel power over someone,
Or was it to feel better about themselves?

Words hold power that many don’t understand,
She knew that but they didn’t understand.
She looked at the victim and she made up her mind,
She took a step forward for she wanted to help.

A moment was what it took,
For her to step forward,
And a moment was what it took,
For her to take a step back.
She didn’t have the courage to help,
Was she just as bad as them?
