By Tuhin Ghosh
With the scorching sun refusing to shun its glare,
She trudged along barefoot towards the unforeseen,
The rain gods hadn’t been kind since last year,
Her parched lips waited with bated breath,
For that one elusive drop.
The blisters on her foot seemed more painful than the oppressive incalescence,
The golden rays spread their wings far and wide,
Warm beams danced around her,
Ensconcing her in the sweltering heat.
Traveling for miles with a child strapped to her back,
To the nearest safe water source,
Sapped all her energy,
But she knew it was a gruelling ritual she had to perform daily.
The sandy terrain made the life tougher than ever,
Traveling for miles in the harsh desert took its toll,
And when they got home,
They had no respite,
It was upon them to complete all household chores,
Bring up the children and care for the old.
The groundwater resources are fast depleting,
Due to the unsustainable consumption,
Escalating the water crisis.
The women are the first victims of such water predicament,
They have nowhere to hide, nowhere to go,
There is nobody to hear the cries and pain deep down inside.
Let us conserve each drop of water,
Recharge traditional water sources
And groundwater charging points,
Fight against deforestation,
Protect our wetlands, harvest the rainwater,
And improve our water infrastructure.
With all of us putting our hands together,
The day may not be faraway,
When the perennial water crisis is over.
Our sisters and mothers,
Have universal access to fresh and clean water,
And live a life of contentment thereafter.
Well-written and vividly highlights the challenges many people face in accessing natural resources.
Outstanding !!! You have brilliantly elaborated pain of village life, specially of women. Will surely do my part in not just conserving water, but conserving nature too for the next generation.
Very well written – kudos, as made me feel the reality staring at us – how we continue to plunder this beautiful world without any remorse even if water scarcity and climate change is showing us the dark side.
A compelling narrative on a burning issue. Beautiful and deep at the same time. Keep writing Tuhin
Wonderful picture of harsh reality….nature also seems to have the divide of the haves and have-nots…..drought here, floods there
U have surely depicted a picture of our countryside and areas where water is in scarecity with ur poetic brilliance……
You’ve painted a picture through this poem
Great read
A compassionate and thoughtful rendering with a poetic bent which leaves a lasting impact on mind. Great work Tuhin!
Excellent poem! It paints a thoughtful and somber picture as seen through the eyes of a poor woman carrying a child and points toward the noble (and environmentally friendly) cause of conserving our precious water resources, improving water infrastructure, and fighting against deforestation. Great job Tuhin!
Nice poem that has potential to inspire possitive action on an important topic. We, city dwellers, are oblivious to the harsh reality that our villages face. We need more rigorous campaigns on climate change.

Heart- touching!!! it actually is a warning bell for us…so nicely expressed, tuhin….
Sad truth but reality. Nicely written which brings alive the images through the words and phrases.
Excellent work!! Simple language brings out the worst truth!! We better behave else generations will suffer!!!
Well written! Impressive as it covers a lot of aspects.
Very well written. A subtle reminder to all of us on a burning issue……conserve water because water is life.
In this poem, you touched upon the consequences of global warming(heat wave) water crises, and the suffering of women and the need to save water. Beautifully written. Expect more and more.
Absolutely brilliant, the way things are going on wont be surprised if the next World war is fought over water…
Outstanding. This is the most crucial issue of our civilization. Hope if we all try our part to fight against it, we can survive in the world.
The Poem touches our lives with a True reminder of our most precious entity – WATER.
Yet we the pseudo civilized humans are just EVIL enough to waste and ignore it.
