The Big Ruse

By Viraj Mishra

Shepherd guides the restless sheep,
From harm's way, in a barn he'll keep,
Lest they seek the open skies,
For it taints the eyes with fleeting lies,
Stay in line with heads in trough.

Shepherd knows sheep the best,
Gives them feed and keep and rest,
Wool for warmth and flesh for food,
Fee is paid no wolves intrude,
Stay in line with heads in trough

Shun the howl, forget the call,
Shepherd's here in might and thrall
Don't fear the dark, nor shadows deep,
Within the barn, their slumber keep
Stay in line with heads in trough

Shadows creep, fill air with dread,
At the gate, the wolves, they tread
Far he runs doesn't look back,
Sheep are dying the wolves attack,
Stay in line with heads in trough

Sheep are fodder for the prey,
Shepherd's ploy- the herd's dismay,
Herd is dead the wolves are fed,
House is clean the barn is red,
Stay in line with head in trough

Will truth emerge, from slumber deep?
Break the chains, while shadows creep?
Stay in line, or break the hold?
Choices made, a story told.
