Nocturnal Wanderings

By Varun Dhingra

I love passing through strange towns at night
When they reveal their secret selves in the soft yellow glow of sleep addled street lamps
I love passing through strange towns at night
When the townspeople have all gone to sleep
I love passing through strange towns at night
When the day's commotion has subsided
When the buildings and billboards and hoardings and everything they advertise, all they stand for is only a shadow of reality, far less potent than a single nocturnal dog's soul piercing howl. Maybe because I think that's how it should be.
I love watching people sleep
Their faces shorn of all traces of artifice
Appearing as they would to God right after he crafted them
