Last Breath – Delhi Poetry Slam

Last Breath

By Karishma Vig

I woke up in the morning
And did my morning chores
I sat with my cup of tea
While rest slept with snores

I felt a little different
But paid no heed
It's normal for a women
Who ignores her need

Where's my breakfast
I heard a voice
I prepared the meal in hurry
And I heard the same twice

I regained the stamina
Which was missing that day
A lot of things needed to be done
How could I lay

My laundry my dishes were waiting
While I was being slow
I went on and on
Not knowing it was time to go

everyone's need was fulfilled
And morning chores were over
I again took a cup of tea
But still felt lower and lower

Now it was time for second shift
I got up for afternoon routine
The kids were back and elders relaxed
The house was neat and clean

By this time I had known
That it's more than normal feel
I would get restless and uneasy
And lost my entire zeal

The kids came, they kissed and cuddled
And hugged me like a wreath
I too tried to reciprocate
And took my last breath

  • Hi Karishma, your poem is a moving reflection on the often overlooked sacrifices and resilience of women. Your words deeply touch the monotonous routines, silent struggles, dedication and selflessness of women. I could resonate with it so much. • Your poem beautifully conveys the emotional and physical toll of a life spent in constant service, with little regard for personal needs or health. It’s a moving reflection on the often invisible burdens carried by women and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-care and recognition.
